Jenna Chan all won individual titles, highlighting Binghamton's performance at the final day of the America East Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at the Boston Track & Tennis Center. In the final team standings, both the Bearcat men's and women's squads placed third out of 10 teams.
Schaffer and Mackay, who anchored the first-place Distance Medley Relay teams on Friday evening, added to their collection of conference crowns on Saturday. Schaffer repeated as the men's mile champion with a time of 4:07.72. Mackay, meanwhile, broke the meet record in the women's 800 with a time of 2:03.49. The old mark of 2:04.64 was set by Elinor Purrier of New Hampshire in 2018.
Schaffer now has four career individual America East championships in track & field, having also won the past two outdoor crowns in the 1,500. In addition, he captured the men's conference cross country title in the fall.
Mackay, meanwhile, has two career individual titles, having also won the outdoor championship in the 1,500 last spring. She is also the two-time defending America East women's cross country champion.
Cassens, who also ran on the women's Distance Medley Relay Team, won the women's 500 in a time of 1:12.84. It marked the first individual conference title of her career.
Later in the meet, Cassens anchored the women's 4x400 relay which finished a close second place to UMBC. The Bearcat quartet, which also included freshman
Hillary Abankwa and graduate students
Nia Joyner and sophomore
Sophia Morone, clocked a time of 3:45.10. The Retreivers, however, were first in a time of 3:44.49.
Another first-time individual champion was Chan, who took top honors in the women's 60 hurdles with a time of 8.61. It capped an impressive weekend for the rookie, who was second in the long jump on Friday.
Chigatayeva and Mackay closed out the Bearcats haul of titles by going 1-2 in the women's 3,000 with times of 9:38.42 and 9:39.63 respectively. Chigatayeva, who also ran on the Distance Medley Team on Friday, now has three career individual crowns. She has won the past two outdoor championships in the women's 3,000 steeplechase.
Abankwa, who was the final member of the Distance Medley Relay team on Friday, was also second in the 400 on Saturday (55.66).
The Bearcats had two other runner-up finishes on Saturday. Junior
Ryan Guerci was a close second in the men's 3,000 (8:10.55) while fellow junior
Marcrene Jeannot was second in the triple jump (49-71/4).
Other top-three performances were turned in by redshirt freshman
Sean Ryan, who was third in the men's 800 (1:52.13) and
Cian Galligan, who was third in the men's 1,000 (2:27.22). In addition, freshman
Marcus Johnson was third in the triple jump (49-5 ½).
Graduate student
Evan Tuthill was the men's America East's Elite 18 Award recipient. The honor is given based on a combination of a participant's academic and athletic accomplishments. Tuthill was fourth in the men's shot put on Saturday (50-4 ½).
All-conference honors were awarded to the top three finishers in an individual event as well as all first-place relay members. The Bearcats posted 11 men's selections as well as five women's honorees. The 11 selections is the most men's selections for Binghamton at the America East indoor meet since it also posted 11 picks in 2019.
Albany won the women's title followed by UMass Lowell and Albany on the women's side. The River Hawks, however, took the men's title (215 points), followed by the Great Danes (172) and Binghamton (115).
