Dan Schaffer won the men's 3,000 invitational race, highlighting Binghamton's performance at the Dr. Sander Columbia Indoor Track & Field Challenge, which was held on Saturday at the New York City Armory. There was no team scoring at the event.
Racing against several unattached runners, Schaffer clocked a time of 7:53.54, which is the 17th-best time at the NCAA Division I level during the current indoor season. In addition, he broke the previous Binghamton program record of 7:56.21, which was set by Erik van Ingen in 2012. Schaffer's previous best time was 7:58.22, which he recorded during the 2020 indoor campaign.
Schaffer has now broken a pair of Binghamton program records so far this indoor season. He set the 5,000 mark of 13:51.91 at the Boston Terrier Season Opening Meet back on Dec. 4.
In addition to his 3,000 time, Schaffer has the 29th-best mile time at the NCAA Division I level so far this indoor season (3:58.84). His 5,000 school-record time is also the 30th-fastest mark.
Junior
Ryan Guerci, meanwhile, clocked a time of 8:06.44 to finish second in the 3,000 college race. That represents the third-fastest time in Binghamton program history, trailing only Schaffer and Van Ingen.
Binghamton's other top-eight finisher on Saturday was freshman
Joey Cardascia, who was sixth in the men's 400 (48.50).
The Bearcats head to the Boston Valentine's Invitational Meet next Friday and Saturday.
