BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Graduate student
Emily Mackay earned second-team All-America honors in a pair of events at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. The two-day event, which was held at the Birmingham Crossplex, concluded on Saturday night
Mackay was 12th overall in the mile, clocking a time of 4:36.34 in the preliminaries on Friday night. She then finished 15th overall in the 3,000 on Saturday with a time of 9:11.26. The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) awarded first-team All-America honors to finishers 1-8 in each event and second-team accolades to finishers 9-16.
In Friday's mile preliminary round, the top four finishers in each of the two heats plus the next fastest two times advanced to the finals. Mackay was fifth in her heat, with the fourth-place time just .01 seconds ahead of her. There was only one heat of the 3,000.
Mackay is now a four-time USTFCCCA All-American during her career at Binghamton. She was 14th overall at the 2020-21 NCAA Cross Country Championships and placed seventh overall in the 5,000 at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. She is now tied with Erik van Ingen (2011-12) for the most NCAA Division I All-America honors for any athlete during Binghamton's 21-year NCAA Division I era.
The 2022 Indoor Track & Field Championships marked the fourth national championship meet Mackay has taken part in. She has also competed in the past two NCAA Cross Country Championships as well as the aforementioned 2021 outdoor meet. In addition, this weekend's championship event was the first time during Binghamton's 21-year NCAA Division I era that an athlete has earned a pair of All-America honors at the same meet.
Including Mackay and Van Ingen, Binghamton has produced five USTFCCCA All-Americans during its Division I era. The other three include Rory Quiller (2007-08), Jesse Garn (2015-16) and Keishorea Armstrong (2015-18). In addition, Cazal Arnett advanced to the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championships.
Mackay still has eligibility for the upcoming outdoor track & field season. That campaign begins at the Raleigh Relays March 24-26.
