DETROIT, MI. - Four representatives of Binghamton wrestling competed on day one of the NCAA Wrestling Championships Thursday afternoon at Little Caesars Arena. Lou DePrez led the way for the Bearcats, grabbing two wins in as many chances to advance to the quarterfinals at 197 pounds.
Brevin Cassella and Joe Doyle went 1-1 on the day, each getting a win in the consolation bracket. They will compete Friday morning. Jacob Nolan had a win in the consolation pigtail matchup at 174 pounds, but finished his tournament at 1-2.
"I'm really proud of our guys," head coach Kyle Borshoff said. "Louie looked great on his feet, and everyone got a win today. We're sending three guys out there tomorrow and it's the first time since I've been here that we've been able to do that. It's definitely something we can build from."
DePrez won his first bout of the day with an 8-2 decision over Jaron Smith of Maryland. The senior was tough on top, and didn't give up a takedown over the entire bout.
In the second round against No. 9 seeded Cameron Caffey of Michigan State, he utilized a takedown in the first and a takedown in the second to win. A pivotal moment was when he did not allow Caffey to escape at the end of the second, which proved to be the difference. Caffey earned a takedown in the final seconds, but DePrez won 5-4.
DePrez is now slated to take on No. 1 seeded Max Dean of Penn State. Dean defeated No. 17 seeded Jay Aiello 4-2 to advance.
Cassella fell in a tight one to No. 8 Philip Conigliaro of Harvard 6-4, but rebounded with a strong win over No. 24 Riley Smucker of Cleveland State to advance to Friday's action. The sophomore did not give up a takedown or escape point en route to the 7-0 decision. It was the first career win at NCAA Championships for Cassella.
Doyle fell by major decision in his opening matchup with Tate Orndorff of Ohio State, despite a near pin in the first period. He fell to the consolation bracket, but cruised past No. 29 Brandon Metz to advance to Friday. It was his second win of the year over Metz, and his first career win at NCAA Championships.
Nolan fell by major decision to No. 3 seeded Logan Massa of Michigan, and came back to win his consolation pigtail matchup with Dominic Solis of Maryland. He grabbed a late takedown to win 3-1. In his final match, he fell by fall to Cornell's Chris Foca, ending his NCAA run. It was the second straight season Nolan had his arm raised at the national tournament.
