Bearcats compete at Raleigh Relays and Lafayette Open

RALEIGH, N.C. and EASTON, Pa. – Binghamton began the 2022 outdoor track & field season at the N.C. State/Raleigh Relays and Lafayette Open this weekend. There was no team scoring at either meet.

At Raleigh, graduate student Dan Schaffer broke his own school record in the men's 5,000. He placed sixth overall. His time of 13:45 eclipsed his previous mark of 13:51, which he clocked during the recent indoor season.
Schaffer's time would have been the 25th-best performance in the East Region in 2021.

Senior Aziza Chigatayeva, meanwhile, was ninth overall in the women's 3000 SC with a time of 10:20. It was just five seconds off her 2021 school record of 10:15.

The Raleigh Relays is considered one of the most competitive early-season meets during the outdoor track & field season. There were over 150 schools across all three NCAA Division levels that took part in the event.

At Lafayette, Binghamton posted 10 individual winners and three relay champions in the non-scoring meet.

On the men's side, first-place finishers included junior Marcrene Jeannot in the triple jump (48-6), sophomore Brandon Love in the pole vault (14-11), graduate student Matt Goyden in the 3,000 SC (9:40.68), junior Dan Gahagan in the 1,500 (3:59.79), sophomore Evan Parise in the 200 (23.32) and freshman Marcus Johnson in the 400 hurdles (56.02).

Johnson was also on the first-place 4x400 relay team that included freshman Oliver Madariaga, junior Nick Malfitano and graduate student Andriy Prokopiv. The Bearcat quartet clocked a winning time of 3:28.94.

Binghamton's individual winners on the women's side included graduate student Elisabeth Van Tassell in the 3,000 SC (11:50.78), freshman Jenna Chan in the 100 hurdles (14.10), graduate student Carmela Culhane in the 800 (2:23.38) and sophomore Penelope Paldino in the 400 hurdles (1:03.85).

Chan's time broke the Binghamton women's freshman record of 14.15, which was set by Sarah Osaheni in 2014.

Chan was also on the first-place 4x100 relay team that included graduate student Nia Joyner, senior Dominique Jackson and junior Sophia Morone. Their winning time was 48.35.

Jackson and Culnane joined senior Stephanie Cassens and freshman Hillary Abankwa to win the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:08.63.

Up next for Binghamton is the William & Mary Colonial Relays April 1-2.
