Standout distance runner adds to her long list of honors

VESTAL, N.Y. – For the second consecutive academic year, graduate student Emily Mackay has been named the America East Conference's Scholar-Athlete for women's cross country. She earned the honor by virtue of her outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments.

During the 2021 cross country season, Mackay repeated as the America East women's individual champion. She then advanced to her second straight NCAA Championship meet by placing third overall at the NCAA Northeast Region Meet. Mackay finished 52nd overall at the national meet.

In the classroom, Mackay was named a 2020-21 COSIDA Academic All-American. She is only the fifth Binghamton student-athlete – and fifth female – to earn the distinction during the athletic program's 21-year NCAA Division I era.

Mackay is just the fifth Binghamton student-athlete ever to earn America East Scholar-Athlete honors two straight years. She joins Jeff Wolniewicz (golf, 2004-05), Brian Koizim (men's swimming & diving, 2006-07) Rory Quiller (men's indoor track & field, 2007-08) and Sven Vloedgraven (men's tennis, 2010-11).

Since Binghamton joined the America East Conference in 2001, it has posted 45 sport Scholar-Athletes.
