EUGENE, Ore. --- In her final meet wearing a Binghamton uniform, graduate student
Emily Mackay placed sixth in the 1,500 at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday afternoon at Hayward Field. In the process, she clinched her fifth NCAA Division I All-America honor, which is the highest total earned by a Binghamton athlete during the program's 21-year NCAA Division I era.
The top eight finishers in each event at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships earned first-team All-America honors from the United States Track & Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Second-team honors went to places 9-16 while honorable mention status was awarded to finishers 17-24.
Â
Mackay's time in the 1,500 was 4:11.10, which broke her previous Binghamton program record of 4:11.65. She set her previous record at the NCAA East Region Meet two weeks ago. The winning time in Saturday's final was 4:09.42 by Sintayeha Vissa of Ole Miss.
"Emily executed a great race today," distance coach
Annette Acuff said. "We couldn't be more proud of her performance."
Â
Mackay's sixth-place finish was worth three points in the team standings. As a result, the Bearcats tied for 49th place as a team at the meet.
Â
Dating back to the NCAA East Region preliminary heat two weeks ago, Mackay finished in the top half of all four races she took part in. There were 12 runners in each of the heats at the East Region and National Meets.
Â
Saturday's performance by Mackay concluded the most successful career by a Binghamton athlete in any sport during the athletic department's 21-year NCAA Division I era. Mackay has earned a pair of first-team All-America honors in outdoor track, having also placed seventh overall in the 5,000 at the 2021 meet. This past March, she earned second-team All-America honors in both the mile and 3,000 at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Mackay's other All-America honor was a 14th-place finish at the 2020-21 NCAA Cross Country Meet.
Emily has worked incredibly hard to be competitive at the national level these past two years," Acuff said. "We sincerely appreciate how well she's represented Binghamton University over the course of her career. She will be dearly missed."
Including Mackay's race on Saturday, Binghamton had a pair of All-Americans at the current NCAA Outdoor Championships. Fellow graduate student Dan Schaffer earned honorable mention status, having placed 24th overall in the 5,000 on Friday night.
