Talented incoming class has roots in Canada, New Zealand and India

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton men's tennis has bolstered its roster with a five-man recruiting class, head coach Nick Zieziula announced Tuesday. Set to join the Bearcats for the 2022-23 year are William Binnie (Toronto, Ontario), Andrew Fang (Vaughan, Ontario), Ronin Lotlikar (Koramangala, India), James McPherson (Auckland, New Zealand) and Berk Tunali (Laval, Quebec).

"This class has shown a lot of perseverance throughout the recruiting process and they have been extremely persistent in pursuing Binghamton," Zieziula said. "With those two attributes we have great confidence in their ability to come in and contribute to our academic reputation excellence as well as on the court. All five of these young men have international competition experience that will help their transition into MAC play as well as our aggressive non-conference schedule."

Binnie was born in Toronto and has lived in Spain and Portugal. In Portugal he trained at the same club as former Bearcat standout Tiago Lourenco. Binnie was ranked in the Top 10 in Portugal for U16 and reached the Portuguese U18 national doubles semifinals. He earned his first ATP points last month.

Fang was ranked as high as No. 25 in Canada in 18U and as high as No. 12 in the Ontario provincial rankings.

Lotlikar has been ranked as high as No. 28 nationally in India (18U) and was No. 13 in the 16U age group. As a junior, he earned an ITF international ranking of No. 339.

McPherson is currently ranked No. 54 for men in New Zealand. He topped off at No. 5 for 18U and has been among the top-50 for men. McPherson captained and led his high school team to a national championship last year and captured the college Sport Auckland singles title in 2021.

Tunali has been ranked as high as No. 2 in Quebec and No. 3 nationally in Canada.

Binghamton returns to campus in August and opens its fall slate by hosting the Star Group Championship Sept. 23-25 at the Lane Tennis Center.
