Cambridge, Mass. – Binghamton men's tennis displayed a strong outing at the ITA DI Men's New England Regional Championship hosted by Harvard University.
The tandem of
Filipe Costa and
Harry Liao highlighted the multi-day event by reaching the quarterfinal round, marking the highest finish by a Bearcat duo at the event since 2016.
In their opening round, they dominated against Boston University 8-1 to advance to the round of 32, where they took on the No. 4 ranked doubles team from Harvard.
Costa and Liao and would go on to upset the tandem from the host institution, winning 8-6 to advance to the round of 16. The Bearcats would face off against No. 11 Boston College, where they forced the match to a tiebreaker set and won 7-5 to proceed to the quarterfinal round on Sunday. The strong efforts from Costa and Liao would soon be halted as they fell in the quarterfinals 8-6 to the 15th ranked team of the tournament.
This marks the fourth time that Binghamton has had a doubles team make it to the quarterfinals and the first since 2016. Sven Vloedgraven and Gilbert Wong reached the quarterfinals in 2009, Kushaan Nath and Thomas Caputo in 2016 and Ruben Devos and Bastian Bornkessel who reached the semifinals in 2011.
"We are really proud of the way that Lipe and Harry battled through the tournament," head coach
Nick Zieziula stated. "They played at an extremely high level through every round, and they had the first breaks of serve against Brown. To open with 7 straight points won on returning games is unbelievable at this level. I'm excited to see these guys continue to grow through the year."
Andre Ajed won both of his qualifying matches in singles to make the main draw of the tournament, where he was bested by No. 7 Edward Liao from Yale.
"This was a very productive regionals weekend for Lipe, Harry and Andre, we need to bring these lessons back to training and keep growing," Zieziula concluded with.
Binghamton returns home to host the Hidden Duels at the Lane-Starke Tennis Center Oct. 23-25.
