Swimming & Diving Sweeps St. Bonaventure

Women pull out 121-120 victory, Men win 148-95

VESTAL, N.Y. – In its first swimming & diving meet of 2023, Binghamton swept St. Bonaventure in a dual meet on Saturday at the Saunders Aquatic Center. The Bearcat women won 121-120 while the men were victorious by a 148-95 margin.

Binghamton posted three double winners – all on the men's side. Sophomore Elijah Lanfear captured the 50 free (21.25) and 100 fly (50.08) while freshman Liam Preston took top honors in the 1,000 free (9:29.09) and 500 free (4:34.10). Junior Henry Shemet, meanwhile, was first in the 200 IM (1:54.34) as well as the 100 free (47.46).

Lanfear also swam on the first-place 200 medley relay team, which included junior Xiaoyu Lin, junior Jake Vecchio and senior Ryan Maierle. The Bearcat quartet clocked a time of 1:32.50.

Preston and Shemet, meanwhile, were on the first-place 200 free relay team, which also included Maierle and junior Liam Murphy. Their winning time was 1:25.12.

Other individual winners on the men's side included Murphy in the 200 free (1:42.84) and Lin in the 100 breast (58.92).

The women's meet, meanwhile, was decided in the final two individual swimming events – the 500 free and the 100 breast. The Bearcats swept the top three places in the 500 free, led by freshman Alexandra Switalski (5:21.54), junior Marley Zimmerman (5:22.69) and fellow junior Skylar Ward (5:29.61). Binghamton then went 1-2 in the 100 breast, paced by junior Courtney Moane (1:06.65) and sophomore Lauren Kuzma (1:07.15).

Moane was also part of the first-place 200 free relay team, which included freshmen Olivia Philbrick and Maria Pignatelli as well as fellow junior Molly Greeley. Their winning time was 1:45.27.

The Bearcat women swept the diving events. Junior Lindsey Weissman captured the one-meter event (2:06.03) while freshman Elizabeth Tirado was first in the three-meter competition (2:19.75). Junior Mel Carousso, meanwhile, won the 1000 free (11:02.46). 

"I thought today was a great day," head coach Jerry Cummiskey said. "I thought we had a great week coming off our training trip. We came back from Florida and were productive, so overall, I am thrilled with how we swam today. We had a lot people push through and come up big today."

Binghamton hosts Marist next Saturday at 1 p.m. in its annual Senior Day Meet.
