Women's Lacrosse drops season opener at Drexel

Five different Bearcats score goals in the contest

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Binghamton women's lacrosse fell to Drexel, the reigning CAA champions, in the season opener on Saturday afternoon, 17-5. The Bearcats had five different players score in the contest. Binghamton scored four of their five goals in the second half. 

The Dragons started fast by scoring three goals in the first six minutes of the game. Grace Harding scored the first two goals of the game for Drexel. The Dragons added another goal a few minutes later to take a four goal lead with four minutes left in the opening quarter. Olivia Muscolino responded with her first goal of the season with three minutes left in the first quarter to cut the deficit to three. Drexel would respond 17 seconds later to increase their lead to 5-1. Hayleigh Simpson recorded two assists in the first quarter for the Dragons.

Early in the second quarter, Simpson scored her first goal of the game putting Drexel up 6-1 with 13 minutes left in the second quarter. Harding picked up the hat-trick a few minutes late giving Drexel a 7-1 lead. Harding added her fourth goal of the game a few minutes later giving the Dragons an 8-1 lead. The Dragons led by the same count at halftime, and out-shot Binghamton 22-7 in the first half. Drexel also had an 8-2 advantage in draw controls in the opening half.

Drexel started the second half with a goal in 31 seconds to increase their lead to 9-1. Kenna Newman took advantage of a free position for Binghamton and responded with her first goal of the season, making the score 9-2 with 12:17 left in the third quarter. Less than a minute later, Corinne Bednarik added her second goal of the game for Drexel to put them in double figures. Bednarik picked up her second assist just a few moments later and Drexel led 11-2. Abby Carroll scored her first goal of the season for Binghamton with 7:26 left in the third quarter to make the score 11-3. Bednarik became the second Dragon to record a hat-trick making the score 12-3 midway through the third quarter. The Dragons would add three more goals before the quarter ended taking a 15-3 into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Bearcats got a goal from Kristen Scheidel to make the score 15-4. A few moments later, Carla Curth responded with the first goal of her career for the Bearcats.

The Bearcats host Pittsburgh on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 1:00 p.m.
