Cruz wins 60 hurdles in Boston, Love third in men’s pole vault

BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman Delilah Cruz won the women's 60 hurdles and junior Brandon Love was third in the men's pole vault as Binghamton competed at the Valentine's Indoor Meet this past weekend at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center. There was no team scoring kept at the meet.

Cruz won her race with a time of 8.83 while Love recorded a lifetime-best height of 16-0 3/4. In the invitational portion of the 60 hurdles, junior Jenna Chan was seventh overall with a time of 8.70.

The Valentines Meet features one of the deepest and most talented field of distance runners each year. This includes professional runners, unattached runners and many of the top collegiate runners from around the nation.

For the Bearcats distance runners, it represents a chance to improve upon their best times. On that note, this year's meet did not disappoint.

Graduate student Stephanie Cassens was 44th out of 247 finishers in the women's 800. Her time of 2:08.23 moves her up to second place in the Binghamton program's all-time performance list. Emily Mackay – a three-time USTFCCCA All-American who graduated last spring – clocked a 2:03.53 in 2022.

Mackay was also at the Valentine's Meet, competing professionally for New Balance in the 3,000. Her first-place time (out of 283 finishers) was 8:40.75, which represents the fastest time turned in by an American women's runner so far this year.

Graduate student Aziza Chigatayeva was 35th overall (out of 105 finishers) in the women's 5K. Her time of 16:15.65 ranks second all time in Binghamton program history. Mackay clocked a program-best time of 15:42.38 in 2021.

On the men's side, senior Matt Cavaliere was 11th out of 44 finishers in the men's 1,000. His time of 2:24.79 ranks third all time in Binghamton program history behind All-Americans Jesse Garn (2:21.10 in 2015) and Erik van Ingen (2:21.28 in 2011).

Junior Josh Stone was 105th out of 250 finishers in the 3,000. His time of 8:12.98 ranks fourth all time in program history. In first-third place is Dan Schaffer (7:50.05 in 2022), van Ingen (7:56.21 in 2012) and current senior Ryan Guerci (8:06.44 in 2022).

The Binghamton throwers, meanwhile, took part in a meet at RIT. There was also no team scoring kept at that meet.

Sophomore Jaston Ormsby was the Bearcats' top finisher at RIT, placing third overall in the weight throw (55-5). Senior Spencer Thomas was fourth in that event (52-1) and was also fourth in the shot put (48-3 ¾). Sophomore Robert Menocal was eighth in the weight throw (48-2).

Up next for Binghamton is the America East Indoor Championships, which will be held at the Track at New Balance in Boston next Friday and Saturday.
