Baseball set for weekend tournament at Wake Forest

| By:

BU will play No. 4 Demon Deacons, unbeaten Mt. St. Mary's and CAA member Towson in Winston-Salem, N.C.

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball will face a prominent program in the ACC for the second straight weekend when the Bearcats (0-3) head to Winston-Salem, N.C. for a three-game tournament. There, BU will see No. 4 Wake Forest (5-0) at 6 p.m. Friday, face Mt. St. Mary's (4-0) at noon on Saturday and finish up with a 10 a.m. game against Towson (0-4) on Sunday at Wake's David F. Couch Ballpark.

Binghamton opened its season with a three-game set at Clemson last weekend, and nearly grabbed Game 2 with an eighth-inning lead before the Tigers rallied to win 3-2. Junior left fielder Tommy Reifler went 7-for-10 and made two highlight-reel catches to save runs. Junior shortstop Isaiah Corry went 5-for-9 (.556) and sophomore center fielder Logan Haskell had five hits (.357).

On the hill, junior No. 2 Gabe Driscoll had an outstanding outing, shutting Clemson down on five scoreless innings in Game 2. He allowed just two singles and struck out four.

Wake Forest is ranked fourth in the country and has outscored opponents 65-10. They are hitting .345 as a team with 16 home runs (3+ per game) and are averaging 13 runs of offense. On the hill, BU will have the tall task of facing reigning ACC Pitcher of the Year Rhett Lowder, a preseason first team All-American who struck out 10 in 5.0 innings of work in his season debut.

The Bearcats have never faced Wake Forest but are 6-8 all-time against the ACC, thanks to a four-game road sweep of No. 19 Virginia Tech in 2017. The matchup against No. 4 Wake Forest matches BU's highest-ranked regular-season opponent in program history. BU has previously faced No. 4 LSU (13-7 loss in 2010) and No. 4 Arkansas (three-game sweep in 2010).

On Saturday, BU will face unbeaten Mt. St. Mary's for the first time in 21 years. The Mount is 4-0 and off to its best start in 38 years. They are competing in the MAAC this season after being a longstanding member of the NEC. Mt. St. Mary's is 4-1 all-time against Binghamton.

Towson has 16 newcomers after going 14-39 last season but is battle tested in the tough CAA. The Bearcats have never faced Towson.
