Bearcats and Bulldogs meet for first time, open weekend series at 6 p.m. Friday

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball (11-9, 3-0 America East) faces first-time opponent Bryant (11-9, 3-0 AE) in a weekend conference series at the Bearcats Baseball Complex. Sharing identical records, the teams will open the three-game set with a 6 p.m. game Friday and then play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. Both teams are unbeaten in America East play to start the season.

The Bearcats have won seven of their last nine and are 6-0 at home. On Tuesday, BU dropped a 22-7 non-conference game at Canisius, but 21 players saw action.

Senior first baseman Kevin Gsell is hitting .553 with 14 RBI in his last 10 games and has RBI in four straight. Senior left fielder Cavan Tully is hitting .429 with 13 runs in his last 11. Junior right fielder Tommy Reifler leads the America East in batting (.418) and has 10 multi-hit games already this season.

Binghamton's weekend rotation will be senior LHP Thomas Babalis (1-2, 5.34 ERA) on Friday, junior RHP Gabe Driscoll (3-0, 2.36 ERA) on Saturday and senior RHP Ryan Bryggman (3-2, 8.77 ERA) on Sunday. Driscoll leads the America East in wins and ERA.

The Bulldogs begin their first season as a member of the America East after enjoying great success in the Northeast Conference. Bryant won 11 regular season titles in 14 years in the NEC and advanced to the NCAA tournament three times. Bryant was picked to finish second (to Binghamton) in the Coaches' Preseason Poll. The team defeated No. 14 Virginia Tech last month and swept a series from A-10 member Davidson. Last weekend, Bryant took all three games from NJIT in their America East debut, winning 5-2, 7-3 and 15-3 in Smithfield, R.I. On Wednesday, the Bulldogs lost at Merrimack 7-6. The team ranks fourth in the AE in hitting (.254), first in pitching (5.32 ERA) and second in fielding (.973).
