Bearcats win both individual and team titles at Fall Foliage Invitational

ST ALBANS, Vt. – Graduate student Josh Stone and junior Sydney Leitner won the men's and women's races and Binghamton won both team championships at the Vermont Fall Foliage Cross Country Invitational on Sunday afternoon. Both the Bearcats men's and women's squads placed first out of six competing teams.

This marks the first time that Binghamton has swept the team titles at a cross country invitational since the 2021 UNH/Pre-Conference Meet. It also represents the first time the Bearcats have swept the individual championships since Stone and Sophia Ryan at the 2022 Iona Meet of Champions.

"We executed our race plans so well today as a team on both sides," head coach Annette Acuff said. " I was very pleased with our focus and effort and that clearly showed up in the results. It was also fantastic to have the opportunity to race on the upcoming conference course in two weeks."

Stone covered the men's 8,000-meter course on Sunday in a time of 24:46 to win his third career cross country race. He led a 1-2-3 Binghamton finish as junior Andrew Rosenblatt was the runner up (25:21) and freshman Bobby Mayclim was third (25:22).

Leitner, meanwhile, won her first career cross country meet by clocking a time of 17:53 in the women's 5,000-meter race. She finished four second ahead of the runner up - MegAnne Gilmore of Vermont (17:57).

Finishing up the team scoring for the Bearcat men were junior Austin Wefer in fifth place (25:36) and freshman Nick Thomas in sixth place (25:40). In addition, sophomore Liam Cody was eighth overall (25:54) and graduate student Asa Friedrich was ninth (25:56).

There were 89 finishers in the men's race.

Binghamton's first-place team score was 24 points - well ahead of second place UAlbany (59) and host Vermont (60). This marks the Bearcats' first men's team invitational title since the 2023 Canisius Alumni Classic.

The Bearcats' other scoring runners in the women's race included freshman Anna Gansrow in sixth place (18:18), senior Jennifer Mui in ninth place (18:25), redshirt freshman Vicky Mordvinova in 14th place (18:33) and graduate student Molly FitzGibbons in 15th place (18:35). In addition, freshman Alicia DeFilippis placed 34th (19:11) and sophomore Brynn Hogan was 43rd (19:22).

There were 112 finishers in the women's race.

Binghamton squeaked out a two-point win over Vermont's women's team - 47-49. UAlbany was third with 70 points. The Bearcats' most recent women's team invitational title came at the aforementioned 2022 Iona Meet of Champions.

Binghamton returns to Vermont on Nov. 2 for the America East Championships.
