Wrestling to Return to Dual Competition Against LIU

| By:

Bearcats will face their first EIWA opponent of the season on Sunday

VESTAL, N.Y. – After competing in multiple tournaments over the last month, the Binghamton wrestling team returns to dual competition with a match at EIWA rival Long Island University on Sunday at noon at Pratt Recreation Center.

Binghamton is coming off an appearance at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Wrestling Invitational the prior weekend. In what is considered one of the most prestigious in-season wrestling tournaments in the country, Brevin Cassella finished in fifth place at 174 lbs. He went 5-2 with two major decisions and one technical fall, defeating four ranked opponents in the process. For his performance, Cassella was named Wrestler of the Week by the EIWA on Tuesday.

The Bearcats have competed in one dual so far this season. Binghamton opened its season with a match against No. 17 Illinois at Journeymen Wrestling's WrangleMania on Nov. 7. Despite being defeated 30-10, Binghamton was able to come away with three victories during the dual, including two against a ranked opponent. Ebert shut out No. 5 Edmond Ruth 2-0 at 184 lbs., while Cassella picked up a 14-1 major decision against No. 11 Danny Braunagel at 174 lbs.

This is the first time that the Bearcats will wrestle another EIWA opponent since the conference announced the creation of the Independence and Patriot divisions back in November. Both Binghamton and LIU are among seven teams in the Independence Division. All of the programs are competing against each other for a divisional championship throughout the season. In 2025-26, the league will launch a full divisional dual meet schedule.

If the Bearcats defeat the Sharks, Binghamton Head Wrestling Coach Kyle Borshoff will earn his 47th win at the helm of the program. That will put him in sole possession of the third-most dual victories in program history, behind Steve Erber (152) and Pat Popolizio (81).
