VESTAL, N.Y. - After 13 straight road games to open the season, Binghamton baseball (4-9) plays its next four at home beginning with a non-conference game Tuesday against visiting St. Bonaventure (4-9). On Friday, BU will welcome NJIT to the Complex for the opening America East weekend series.
During the team's seven-game swing through North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia, BU pressed No. 1 Wake Forest in two narrow defeats, defeated first-time opponent Valparaiso and took one of three at VMI. The Bearcats are battling without three injured starters who occupy the middle of the lineup.
Senior right fielder
Mike Gunning leads the team and ranks second in the America East in hitting (.347), home runs (6) and RBI (14). Junior catcher
Evin Sullivan is hitting .311 with seven RBI and sophmore shortstop
Mike Stellrecht has a team-high .415 on-base percentage.
Freshman
Hayden Tarsia makes his second start of the season on Tuesday. He is 0-0 with a 3.60 ERA.
The Bonnies are coming off a weekend in Murfreesboro, Tenn. where they dropped two of three against Middle Tennessee — a team BU will face six times this spring. Bona's signature win thus far was a 4-3 extra-inning victory at ACC member Louisville on Feb. 23. The Bonnies are hitting .266 as a team and have a 9.17 pitching ERA.
The team has 19 newcomers after going 8-40 last season (5-19 in Atlantic 10).
The Bearcats hold an 11-5 head-to-head advantage and won last year's matchup 14-4 at the Stadium.
