Baseball heads to UMBC for weekend series

Bearcats and Retrievers will play DH on Friday, single game on Sunday

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball (7-10, 2-1 America East) travels to Baltimore to face UMBC (6-11, 0-0 AE) in an America East weekend series. The teams will play a doubleheader Friday afternoon, wait out the pending poor weather on Saturday and finish with a single game Sunday at Alumni Field.

The Bearcats are coming off their conference-opening weekend when they took two of three at home from NJIT. Junior left fielder Logan Haskell had a strong weekend and has lifted his team-high batting average to .347. On Sunday, Haskelll went 5-for-5 with four singles, a double and three runs scored. On Saturday, senior second baseman Isaiah Corry hit a walkoff grand slam in the bottom of the 10th inning to give BU the win. Senior right fielder Mike Gunning leads the Bearcats with seven home runs and 17 RBI.

Binghamton has a .257 team batting average and a 5.05 pitching ERA. Both figures rank first in the conference.

UMBC is coming off a 13-7 win over Delaware State on Wednesday. Last weekend, the Retrievers took two of three against Yale. They began the season by dropping 10 of their first 11 but have won five of their last six. UMBC was picked to finish third in the preseason poll (behind BU and Maine). They return four all-conference selections from a 30-win team that went 16-8 in the America East, finished runnerup in the standings and third at the conference championship.

Since UMBC joined the America East in 2004, Binghamton leads the all-time series 58-27. But the Retrievers won three of the five head-to-head games last spring, including two of three in the regular season series in Vestal. The teams split two games at the America East tournament with BU eliminating UMBC 7-1 in the most recent matchup.
