VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball continues its long road stretch to open the season when the Bearcats (3-6) face three opponents in a six-day stretch that takes them from Tennessee to Virginia. Binghamton meets East Tennessee State on Tuesday and then BU faces VMI for a weekend set in Lexington.
After pushing No. 1 Wake Forest to the wire in a pair of narrow defeats, BU finished the weekend with a 3-2 win over Valparaiso on Sunday.
The Bearcats are hitting .246 as a team (2nd in America East) and have a 5.64 pitching ERA (1st in AE). Individually, senior right fielder
Mike Gunning ranks 12th in the nation with five home runs and is second in the conference with 11 RBI.
East Tennessee State has jumped out to a 9-2 record. Binghamton has gone 3-3 all-time against the Bucs, who were picked to finish fifth in the Southern Conference. The programs haven't met in 21 years after playing three-game sets in 2002 and 2003 in Johnson City, Tenn.
VMI is 6-7 but took three of four against fellow America East member NJIT last weekend. The Keydets are hitting .280 as a team and have 14 home runs in 13 games. Binghamton and VMI have split 34 games down the middle, though BU has won seven of the last nine head-to-head.
