Bearcats and Bulldogs open three-game series Friday afternoon

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball (13-15, 3-6 America East) gets a shot at first-place Bryant (19-11, 8-1 AE) when the teams play a three-game America East series this weekend in Smithfield, R.I. The teams will play single games Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons at Conaty Park.

The Bearcats have won six of their last eight, including a 10-3 non-conference win over Le Moyne on Tuesday. Binghamton leads the America East in team batting (.274) and fielding (.972) and ranks second in pitching (5.64) but is temporarily mired in last place in the standings one-third of the way through the league slate. There are five series' remaining before the conference tournament begins May 22-25 in Binghamton.

Senior right fielder Mike Gunning leads the team in average (.330), home runs (12) and RBI (31). He also is atop the America East in home runs and RBI. Junior catcher Evin Sullivan is hitting .327 and junior left fielder Logan Haskell is at .315.

Bryant is scorching hot, having won eight of its last nine and 18 of 22 since starting the season 1-7. The Bulldogs were picked to finish fifth in the America East Preseason Coaches' Poll but have jumped out of the gate 8-1 in league play, thanks to sweeps over UMBC and UAlbany and a series win over Maine. In conference play, Bryant boasts a league-best 3.53 pitching ERA. The team has nine players with double-digit RBI totals, led by senior first baseman Gavin Noriega (.333, 10 HR, 28 RBI). Reigning America East All-Rookie choice Zac Zyons (.302, 19 RBI) has continued his production. Junior right-hander Luke Delongchamp leads the conference in ERA (2.73).

Binghamton and Bryant had never played before last season and they split six games, with each team winning two of three at home.
