Bearcats battling for playoff spot; teams will play Friday night, Saturday and Sunday afternoons at Stadium

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball plays its final home regular season series this weekend when the Bearcats (18-25, 7-11 America East) welcome UMBC (22-20, 11-7 AE) to the Stadium for a three-game series. The teams will play Friday night and Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

After a bye weekend and no midweek games, Binghamton returns to conference play for the first time in 12 days with a crucial series. There are six regular season games remaining and the Bearcats are in the sixth and final playoff position but only a half-game ahead of Maine for that final spot.

Binghamton leads the America East in fielding (.975) and ranks third in pitching (5.63 ERA) and fourth in hitting (.265).

Senior ace Gabe Driscoll (4-3, 3.42 ERA) will start Friday's senior lefty Nelson Berkwich (4-5, 4.62 ERA) will pitch on Saturday and graduate right-hander Spencer Howell (1-2, 7.01) will pitch Sunday's finale.

The Retrievers are in the midst of a busy week, having played non-conference games at Georgetown (L 11-6) and Delaware State (W, 9-8) on Tuesday and Wednesday.

UMBC is in second place in the America East standings, thanks in part to a home sweep of Maine last weekend. The team has had a wild stretch of runs this spring. They started 1-9, then went 9-1, then lost four before winning five straight. UMBC is 17-3 at home but just 5-17 on the road. It's also been feast or famine in conference play for the Retrievers, who have swept Binghamton, UAlbany and Maine but got swept by Bryant and lost two of three to NJIT and UMass Lowell.

UMBC leads the conference in pitching (4.89) and ranks third in both hitting (.268) and fielding (.968).

UMBC swept the Bearcats in a three-game set March 22-24 in Baltimore, winning 2-0, 11-9 and 11-8. The Retrievers won three of five matchups last season, though BU still leads the all-time series 58-30.
