Three-time national qualifier wrestled at Buffalo, Iowa State

VESTAL, N.Y. – Three-time national qualifier Sam Schuyler is joining the Binghamton wrestling team as an assistant coach. The addition was announced by Binghamton Head Coach Kyle Borshoff Monday.

Schuyler wrestled at Buffalo from 2017-21 before transferring to Iowa State, where he wrestled from 2021-23. The heavyweight qualified for the NCAA Wrestling Championships in each of his final three seasons, winning a combined four matches. In his final appearance in the 2023 tournament, Schuyler won three matches to reach the Round of 12.

"We are lucky to add Sam to our staff and are looking forward to what he can add to the program," said Borshoff. "Sam is coming from an excellent program, and I am excited about the new energy and ideas that he can help bring to our program."

Throughout his six-year career, Schuyler was victorious in 70 matches. He finished in the top five at the Big 12 Championship in both of his seasons with the Cyclones (second in 2023, fourth in 2022). While at Buffalo, Schuyler finished fifth at the 2021 MAC Championships. Additionally, Schuyler won the 97 kg., freestyle national championship at the 2019 UWW Junior Nationals.

"I am blessed for the opportunity to join Binghamton University as the new assistant coach," said Schuyler. "My goal is to help develop successful Division I wrestlers, as well as help them strive to be better students and people. Throughout my wrestling journey, I have been exposed to world champions, national champions, and successful coaches, which has given me the tools to help Binghamton reach new heights."

After his final collegiate match, Schuyler joined the Iowa State coaching staff as a graduate assistant for the 2023-24 season. That year, he helped the Cyclones win their first Big 12 championship since 2009. At the 2024 NCAA Wrestling Championships, Iowa State placed fourth, its best finish in the tournament since 2010. Four wrestlers made the podium, the program's most since 2009. Among them was David Carr, who won his second individual national championship.

Schuyler also excelled in the classroom. In 2023, he received First Team Academic All-Big 12 honors, made the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll and was selected as a Scholar All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. He received his bachelor's degree in liberal studies in 2022.

A native of Kings Park, N.Y., Schuyler qualified for state twice while wrestling for Kings Park High School. In his senior season, he finished third at state in 2017 with a record of 41-1. That same year, he finished fourth at the NHSCA Senior Nationals.

Schuyler joins the Bearcats after they put up one of their strongest seasons in recent memory in 2023-24. Binghamton won nine duals overall, including seven against EIWA opponents. Both totals are their highest since 2017-18. Among those victories was an 18-17 win against No. 18 Navy, the program's first against a top 20 opponent since it began competing in Division I in 2001. The Bearcats also picked up a 21-15 win at Northwestern, their first against a Big Ten program since 2017. Throughout the season, Binghamton had a wrestler named Wrestler of the Week by the EIWA four times, including three weeks in a row from Feb. 13-26. Brevin Cassella, Cory Day, Lou DePrez and Jacob Nolan ultimately qualified for the 2024 NCAA Wrestling Championships. In the tournament, Cassella, Day and DePrez each won two matches, making it the first time at least three Binghamton wrestlers won that many matches at nationals since 2012.
