Bearcats wrap up fall schedule at midseason invitational

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Binghamton swimming & diving teams took part in the three-day Magnus Cup Invitational, which was hosted by Cleveland State University. The event wrapped up on Saturday evening.

In the final team standings, the Bearcat men were third out of six teams while the women were seventh out of nine squads. Binghamton came away from the meet with three-first-place finishes, one meet record, four school records and one freshman record. In addition, the Bearcats had their fourth diver of the season meet the NCAA Zone standard.

"Overall, it was a pretty good weekend for both teams," head coach Jerry Cummiskey said. "We saw a lot of great swimming and diving as well as plenty of things we will work to correct for February. We have a great young core and we expect that they will continue to improve throughout the season."

Sophomore Evan Peters broke the meet record in the men's 200 free and was also part of the first-place 800 free relay team. His 200 free time of 1:37.86 eclipsed the 2021 mark of 1:36.78 which was set by Andrew Martin of Xavier. Peters also finished  in second place in the 200 back (1:48.05).

Joining Peters on the winning 800 free relay team were sophomore William Deutmeyer, junior Harrison Lambert and senior Liam Preston. The Bearcat quartet clocked a time of 6:36.48. Preston also finished second to Peters in the 200 free with a time of 1:37.86.

Binghamton's other first-place performance was turned in by freshman Isaih Francis in the 50 back (22.50).

In the diving events, freshman Samuel Pikofsky-Christiansen was the runner up in both the one-meter event (308.00) and three-meter competition (308.00). In the process, he met the NCAA Zone Standard in the one-meter event (300). Pikofsky-Christiansen is the fourth Binghamton diver to meet a NCAA Zone Standard this season, joining senior Elizabeth Tirado, junior Dylan Norby and sophomore Jacob Koclanis.

On the women's side, freshman Julia Iwanow continued her stellar season with a runner-up finish in the 200 breast (2:13.53). In the process, she broke her own school and freshman records of 2:14.07, which she set earlier this season.

Senior Maria Pignatelli was a part of two school records during the Magnus Cup. In the 100 IM prelims, her time of 57.71 broke her own mark of 57.84 from last season. She also joined freshmen Lauren Maierle and Elle Gerbes as well as junior Ava Olsian to clock a 200 free relay time of 1:33.35. That mark, which was set during a time trial at the meet, broke the program's 2024 record of 1:33.83.

Binghamton's final school record at the Magnus Cup was set by junior Haley Nowak in the 50 fly. Her 11th-place time of 25.37 topped Brooke Pettis' 2018 mark of 25.49.

The Bearcats' continue their season on Jan. 24 at Marist.
