Softball coaches appear as guests on WNBF

Coach Bump and coach Transue talk about championship season

VESTAL, N.Y. - Head coach Jess Bump and assistant coach Michaela Transue were guests on WNBF's "Binghamton Now" show with longtime host Bob Joseph on Tuesday morning. Together, they talked about winning the America East title, their softball coaching careers and the status of the Bearcat program.

Bump and Transue led Binghamton to a 36-14 (16-2 AE) record this past season and both the America East and regular-season and tournament championships. The Bearcats also earned their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2015 and were the three seed in the Oregon Regional.

"We kind of knew from the fall that this was going to be a championship-caliber team," Bump said. "They really came together and worked hard to win the championship. I'm just super proud of the team and them making it to (NCAA) Regionals this year."

"It's been really awesome for the community," Transue said. "Just what our team was able to accomplish and the support we had from everyone has been great. We are still getting congratulations from people, which has been awesome."

Both Bump and Transue have deep roots in the Binghamton area. Bump graduated from nearby Windsor High School in 2010 while Transue is a 2014 graduate of Chenango Forks High School. They both stayed in touch through the years and reunited in 2023 when Bump hired Transue as an assistant coach.

"Michaela and I have been friends for a long time," Bump said. "We both have a lot of pride not just with Binghamton softball but with the Binghamton area in general. We try to bring (New York State) Section 4 athletes on our team and that's why you are seeing great support from the community year after year."

"Being able to come back to my hometown and work with Jess has been great," Transue said. "There is a lot of friendship and trust between us and you saw the payoff this year."

News Radio WBNF AM 1290 is one of the most listened to Binghamton radio stations in the local area. It has been the primary station for Binghamton basketball games the past quarter century.
