Regular season champs garner six all-conference selections, two all-rookie pics in big haul

VESTAL, N.Y. - After winning the program's fourth America East regular season title in the last five years under head coach Neel Bhattacharjee, Binghamton women's soccer earned an appropriate haul of awards from the conference.

Senior back Sophia Garofalo was named repeat Defensive Player of the Year, junior forward Jahkaya Davis took home Striker of the Year honors and a league-high six Bearcats were named all-conference. Additionally, Binghamton garnered two all-rookie and three all-academic laurels.

Garofalo anchored a Bearcat defense that has only allowed eight goals in 16 games this fall, with 10 shutouts (7th in NCAA) and a paltry 0.50 goals against average. She was named Defensive Player of the Week three times this season and also repeats as both a first team all-conference and all-academic selection. She is the lone Bearcat to ever win Defensive Player of the Year accolades and now joins five other America East alums as a two-time winner. Garofalo also ran her first team all-conference total to three years.

Davis leads the league with nine goals and 18 points. In conference play, she also was tops with six goals and 12 points. Her four game-winning goals are tied for the most in the conference. Davis becomes Binghamton's third-ever Striker of the Year and second in the last five years (Maya Anand in 2022). She repeated as a first team all-conference selection.

Garofalo and Davis were joined on the all-conference first team by senior forward Paige Luke and senior wing back Megan Baker. Senior goalkeeper Rebecca Kessler and junior midfielder Anna Buckwalter were named to the second team. Freshmen Chelsea Donaldson and Taylor Gabel were picked to the All-Rookie Team.

Luke repeats as a first team all-conference choice after averaging a point per game and ranking No. 2 in the America East with eight assists. She also was named to the All-Academic Team.

Baker combined steady defending with four assists on the attack and she repeats as an all-conference selection after being a second-team pick last year.

Kessler ranks third in the nation with 10 shutouts and also is 13th in goals against average (0.50). She was selected to the second team for a second straight season and repeated as an All-Academic Team choice.

Donaldson and Gabel earned significant minutes in their first collegiate seasons and both made an impact in a veteran lineup. Donaldson tallied three goals and an assist and Gabel added three goals.

The Bearcats carry the No. 1 seed into this Sunday's America East semifinal game, which Bing will host at 1 p.m. They will await the winner of Thursday's 4-5 game between Vermont and UMBC.
