VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton men's lacrosse team (2-5, 1-0 America East) broke through with a season-high 16 goals to defeat UMass Lowell (2-4, 0-1 America East) 16-9 Saturday at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
In the Bearcats' first game in America East Conference play this year,
Andrew Girolamo nearly tied the Binghamton program record for goals in a game as the junior scored a career-high seven against the River Hawks. Girolamo missed tying the record by one goal, which is held by Jeff Rurey. He scored eight goals against Lehigh on March 30, 2010. Girolamo's seven goals are the most scored in a game by a Bearcat since April 1, 2023, when Matthew Keegan recorded seven of his own in Binghamton's 21-10 against UMass Lowell. The 21 goals posted by Binghamton in that game are also tied for the most goals scored by the Bearcats in a single game in program history.
"I thought we shared the ball really well," said Binghamton Head Men's Lacrosse Coach
Kevin McKeown. "I thought we did a good job just kind of running our offense. We made changes a couple of weeks ago, and I thought this was the first time we kind of let the offense work and our best job of working for good opportunities that had good chances to go in. I'm proud of the guys after a tough stretch just continuing to stick together and get better every week."
Both
Will Feldmann and
Tyler Martini each added four points for the Bearcats on one goal and three assists.
Drew Filanowski and
Gavin Jacobsen, meanwhile, each put up three points on two goals and one assist.
Nolan Sharkey also scored a career-high two goals for Binghamton. On the other side of the field,
Connor Winters stopped 16 shots for the Bearcats.
UMass Lowell grabbed the momentum early by jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter on goals from Ryan Proctor and Nolan Marshall. Girolamo got the Bearcats on the board with his first goal of the day at 5:05 after he was set up on a pass from Martini. After Danny Burke scored an unassisted goal for the River Hawks at 4:01, Girolamo closed out the first quarter with his second goal at 1:41, with an assist from Feldmann.
Trailing 3-2 in the second quarter, Sharkey tied the game at three after he sprinted down the field following a save from Winters and fired in his second goal of the season at 13:24. Binghamton and UMass Lowell then traded a goal, with Alex Lafreniere scoring for the River Hawks at 12:31, while Filanowski scored for the Bearcats one minute later. Burke put UMass Lowell back ahead 5-4 at 7:58. It would be the last time the River Hawks would hold the lead.
Girolamo tied the game at 5:57 with another assist going to Feldmann. It was Feldmann who then gave the Bearcats the lead with a tally at 2:29. Jacobsen closed out the half with his first goal of the game with five seconds left in the quarter, as Binghamton went into halftime up 7-5. But the Bearcats' run was not finished yet.
Binghamton opened the third quarter by scoring the first three goals.
Nico Spaziani continued the run with a goal at 10:25. Martini followed with a strike at 9:52, before Girolamo posted his fourth goal of the day at 5:46. Colby Frigon ended UML's scoreless drought with a goal at 2:21, but
Matthew Rincon then set up Sharkey with his second goal of the day with 59 seconds left in the quarter. Girolamo scored again with three seconds remaining, while Lafreniere picked up a goal right before the buzzer sounded to end the frame. Binghamton entered the fourth up 12-7.
Lafreniere completed his hat trick with a goal at 13:01 to bring the River Hawks within four goals at 12-8, but the Bearcats would not let their conference foes get any closer. Binghamton closed out the game by scoring four of the final five goals of the day, with Girolamo scoring twice during that stretch. Filanowski and Jacobsen each added a tally during that run, allowing Binghamton to win its America East opener.
Other Highlights
- With his 16 saves, Winters extended his streak of games with at least 10 saves made to nine dating back to last season. The netminder was one save shy of tying his season high of 17. However, Winters did set a new season high in ground balls with four.
- Aside from setting a new career-high for goals in a game, Girolamo also reached a new career high for goals in a season. The junior has scored 20 goals in 2026, surpassing his previous career high of 17 in 2025.
- Girolamo also caused a career-best two turnovers against the River Hawks on Saturday.
- Frequently going against one of the top-performing faceoff experts in the country in UML's Justin Alexander, Flynn Wilson held his own by winning 10 faceoff attempts while also collecting a team-high six ground balls.
- Aidan McMinn tied his career high in caused turnovers with three against UML. The sophomore previously set that mark against St. Bonaventure on Feb. 14.
- In addition to his assist on Sharkey's second goal of the game, Rincon also collected five ground balls for Binghamton.
