VESTAL, NY - Sophomore third baseman
Rachel Carey has been named the America East Softball Player of the Week. It marks the second time this season that she has earned the conference's weekly accolade.
In the Bearcats' lone two games last week, Carey went 4-for-8 (.500) with two home runs, a double and six RBI against Cornell on April 21. She posted an on-base percentage (OBP) of .600 and slugging percentage (SLG) of 1.375.
After being named the America East Rookie of the Year as a freshman, Carey has more that lived up to her promising first season. She leads the America East and ranks fifth in the nation with a .488 batting average. Carey also ranks second in the nation with 0.43 doubles per game.
Carey has hit for both average and power this season. She ranks second in the conference with nine home runs, third with 32 RBI, first in OBP (.529), third in SLG (.848) and first in OPS (1.361).
In just her second season, Carey has already made her mark in the Binghamton record book. She is just the second sophomore in program history to reach the 100-hit mark for their career as well as the fourth underclassman to hit their 20th career home run.
Previous this season, Carey shared the Player of the Week award with Emily Riggs of UMBC back on March 10.
Binghamton (13-24, 12-5 AE) wrap up the regular season with a weekend series against UMass Lowell this Friday-Saturday.
