VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton volleyball team battled hard, but was overpowered by UMBC in the fourth set falling 3-1, in America East action Sunday afternoon at the West Gym. The Bearcats (11-16, 3-6 AE) won the second set, but was unable to keep the momentum as they were defeated by the Retrievers (13-11, 3-6 AE) 21-25, 25-21, 22-25 and 14-25 completing the season sweep of BU. Freshman Kristin Hovie set a BU freshman record with a match-high 24 kills.

In an evenly contested first set both teams were searching for some breathing room. Back-to-back kills by sophomore Grace Vickers and freshman Kristin Hovie tied the frame at 10. The two teams exchanged the next six points before a 5-1 UMBC run broke the set open, 21-17. Following a BU time out, a block by Hovie and junior middle Alex Roland helped trim the lead to one, 21-20. The Retrievers offense was too much however, scoring four of the last five points to take the stanza, 25-21.

The Bearcats displayed their toughness in the second set, as a powerful kill by Hovie gave BU a slim one point edge. A block by Vickers and freshman setter Amanda Dettmann extended Binghamton's lead to 15-12, forcing a UMBC time out. The Retrievers fought back to knot the frame at 17, but the Bearcats imposed their will going on an 8-3 run to close out the set, 25-21. A perfectly placed dump by Dettmann coupled with Retriever errors aided the Bearcat run.

A tense third set witnessed UMBC jump out to a 12-7 lead thanks to a 3-0 run. Another dump by Dettmann along with a block cut the visitor's lead to two, 17-15. BU continued to press UMBC as kills by Hovie and classmate Annelot Nieuwenhuis brought the Bearcats within one, 20-19. Following a UMBC time out a block by Hovie and Vickers evened the stanza at 20. The Retrievers did not back down winning five of the last seven points securing the frame, 25-22.

Binghamton was ineffective in the fourth set as UMBC raced out to a 12-7 advantage. BU cut the lead to three forcing a Retriever time out, but a 7-0 UMBC run pushed the lead to ten. Eight Binghamton attack errors aided UMBC in the frame, with the Bearcats recording a .000 hitting clip. The Retrievers took the game's final frame 25-14.

A bright spot in the match was the tremendous performance by the newcomer from Neenah, Wisconsin, Kristin Hovie. Her 24 kills against UMBC is a new BU freshman record and the highest total for a Bearcat all season. Along with her 24 kills, Hovie accumulated a .276 hitting percentage, five digs and two blocks.

Amanda Dettmann handed out 39 assists and 11 digs for the double-double. Grace Vickers had a solid defensive performance tallying five blocks and six digs. Sophomore libero Xiomara Ortiz picked up a match-high 16 digs for the Bearcats.

Binghamton will look to bounce back Friday, Nov. 4 as they travel to Providence. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. against the Friars. Binghamton is 3-0 all-time against Providence, including a four-set home victory back on Oct. 9.
