Box Score HighlightsVESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton volleyball team bounced back from a tough five-set loss to Hartford Friday night with an emphatic four-set victory over Stony Brook, Saturday afternoon from West Gym. The Bearcats (5-16, 3-2 AE) defeated the Seawolves (11-9, 2-2 AE) for the 16th time in the two SUNY Centers Division I history.
Binghamton was led by sophomore
Allison Hovie, who recorded her second straight double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs. Classmate
Bianca Anderson registered one of her best games of her young collegiate career with an 11 kills and 5 blocks. Anderson finished off the fourth and final set with back-to-back kills. Senior setter
Amanda Dettmann handed out 36 assists while adding 18 digs. Sophomore libero
Bailey Walker recorded at least 20 digs for the fifth straight match.
Binghamton prevailed in the first set, 27-25, despite a .087 hitting clip. Neither team was very efficient in the opening set as the two combined for 17 attack errors. Anderson recorded four of her 11 kills during the frame while senior hitter
Kristin Hovie added three. Stony Brook opened a 15-10 lead midway through the set, but following a Binghamton timeout the Bearcats responded with an 8-2 run aided by multiple Seawolf errors. Stony Brook regained the lead however, before Binghamton fought off three set points to earn the hard-fought 1-0 advantage.
The Bearcats were a bit more opportunistic in the second set, taking advantage of a negative hitting clip by the Seawolves. Binghamton limited Stony Brook to just five kills in the set while the Bearcats connected on 15 terminations, five coming from the right arm of
Allison Hovie. Binghamton began to pull away midway through the stanza as consecutive kills from
Kristin Hovie and
Alexa Zbytniewski helped extend BU's lead to five, 16-11. Stony Brook pulled within two late in the frame, but it wasn't enough as Binghamton took a 2-0 lead, 25-20.
After dropping a poorly played third set (6 kills, 6 attack errors, .000 HP), Binghamton put Stony Brook away in the fourth set with a back-breaking .542 hitting percentage. The Bearcats committed just two attack errors in the set jumping out to an 11-4 lead and never looked back. Binghamton maintained its seven-point advantage throughout the latter half of the frame eventually extending the lead thanks to a pair of
Kristin Hovie kills. Anderson finished off the Seawolves with the final two kills giving the Bearcats the final set 25-12.
Binghamton collected a season-high 10 service aces for the second straight match. The Bearcats were dominant at the net picking up a season-best 14.5 blocks. Stony Brook shot themselves in the foot several times committing eight service errors and 33 attack errors.
The Bearcats return to action next Sunday when they welcome UMBC to West Gym for a 1 p.m. matchup over Homecoming Weekend. Binghamton is a midst a six-match homestand with its entire home schedule being played over the next three weeks.
