Volleyball Sweeps UMBC On Homecoming

Hovie sisters combine for 22 kills to lead Bearcats

Box Score Highlights

VESTAL, N.Y. – The Binghamton volleyball team earned back-to-back wins for just the second time all season after sweeping UMBC, Sunday afternoon from West Gym. As the first half of America East play comes to a close, the Bearcats (6-16, 4-2 AE) are now in a tie for second place with Albany following their dismantling of the Retrievers (9-10, 3-3 AE).

"I thought we moved the ball very well today, maybe the best we have all season," head coach Glenn Kiriyama said. "We got off to a good start in the first set which always helps and we were efficient offensively. We were aggressive at the net getting our hands on a lot of balls which allowed our defense to slow down a very good hitting team."

Sisters Allison and Kristin Hovie combined for 22 kills to lead the Bearcats, who defeated UMBC at home for the third straight year. Senior setter Amanda Dettmann recorded her second consecutive double-double (fifth of the year) with a match-high 34 assists and 14 digs. Sophomore libero Bailey Walker registered her sixth straight game with at least 20 digs, picking up a team-high 21.

Both teams were hot offensively in the opening set combining for 34 terminations in the frame. However, Binghamton prevailed 25-23 thanks to six kills from Allison Hovie. UMBC opened up a slim 12-9 lead, but an 8-2 run by the Bearcats gave BU a 17-14 advantage, forcing a Retriever timeout. UMBC battled back to even the stanza late at 23, but back-to-back errors stalled the Retriever attack.

The Bearcats committed just one attack error in route to a 25-13 victory in the second set, taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the match. Binghamton dominated the frame to the tune of a .370 attack percentage while limiting UMBC to a match-low .028 hitting clip. Kristin Hovie connected on four kills during the frame to lead Binghamton.

Binghamton jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the third set, but UMBC immediately responded with an 8-2 run to take a 13-10 advantage. The Bearcats fought back thanks to eight UMBC attack errors claiming a 21-18 lead late in the set. A pair of kills by Allison Hovie helped Binghamton capture the straight set victory, 25-21.

The Bearcats defense limited the Retrievers to a .117 hitting clip, holding their opponent under a .200 attack percentage for the fifth straight match. Binghamton receiving game was stout all afternoon, picking up 70 digs compared to just 54 by UMBC. The Bearcats also collected nine total blocks opposed to just three by the Retrievers.

Binghamton begins the second half of conference play with just a single match for the second straight week as the Bearcats will have five days to prepare for Albany. The Bearcats outlasted the Great Danes in five sets back on Sept. 26. Binghamton and Albany are scheduled for a 7 p.m. first serve.
