HighlightsVESTAL, N.Y. – Senior setter
Amanda Dettmann eclipsed 4,000 career assists while leading the Binghamton volleyball to a straight-set victory over UMass Lowell, Friday night in an America East match from West Gym. The Bearcats (8-16, 6-2 AE) have won four straight matches extending its unbeaten streak against the River Hawks (2-22, 0-8 AE) to seven games.
Dettmann, who needed 32 assists to reach 4,000, handed out a match-high 34 assists to become the third Bearcat in program history to eclipse the mark. The four-year starter connected with classmate
Kristin Hovie late in the third set before a timeout by the River Hawks allowed Dettmann to be properly recognized.
Three Bearcats were beneficiaries of Dettmann's outstanding play as
Allison Hovie,
Alexis LaGoy and
Megan Burgess each recorded double-digit kills against UMass Lowell. The trio combined for 35 of Binghamton's 48 terminations as Dettmann led the Bearcats to a .298 hitting clip. Dettmann delivered an all-around performance adding 10 digs, six kills, two blocks and two service aces to her stat line.
LaGoy was on fire in the first set collecting six of her match-high 12 kills in the opening frame. The Bearcats trailed early but the Dettmann-LaGoy connection handed Binghamton its first lead, as three straight kills by the three-time America East Rookie of the Week sparked a 7-0 run. From there the Bearcats never looked back as a .323 attack percentage led Binghamton to a 25-18 first set victory.
Allison Hovie took over in the second set registering six of her 12 kills in the stanza. Binghamton pushed out to a 15-9 lead for the second consecutive set, but UMass Lowell did not back down trimming the Bearcat lead to three. However, three LaGoy kills down the stretch handed Binghamton the set 25-18 and a 2-0 lead in the match. The River Hawks hit a match-best .217, but it wasn't enough against a potent BU offense that hit .351 in the frame.
The third and final set witnessed both teams battle back and forth with seven early ties. The River Hawks evened the frame at 10 before Binghamton tallied four straight points to create some breathing room. Burgess smashed one of her 10 kills to hand the Bearcats its largest lead of the set, 19-13, as Binghamton never let UMass Lowell get any closer than four. The Bearcats committed a match-high seven attack errors during the frame, but prevailed 25-19 to complete their fourth sweep of the season.
Sophomore libero
Bailey Walker continues to hold down Binghamton's back line extending her streak of 20-dig matches to eight with 23 against the River Hawks. Walker also added a pair of service aces to push her team-high total to 30.
Binghamton, who didn't hit over .250 until its 16th match of the season, has now eclipsed the mark in its three consecutive matches. The Bearcats performed well defensively picking up 56 digs compared to the River Hawks' 33. Binghamton also registered five total blocks as five different Bearcats recorded at least one block.
The Bearcats remain one-game back of first-place New Hampshire after the Wildcats defeated Albany in four sets in the state's capital Friday night.
Binghamton hosts defending champion New Hampshire on Sunday, Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. from West Gym. The volleyball program will honor its three graduating seniors (Dettmann, Hovie and
Alexa Zbytniewski) prior to the match.
