STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Binghamton volleyball team suffered its second straight loss falling to Stony Brook in four sets, Friday night from Pritchard Gym. The Bearcats (8-18, 6-4 AE) fell out of second place in the league standings as the Seawolves (16-11, 6-3 AE) took over their position by a half game.
"We didn't execute very well," head coach Glenn Kiriyama said. "We weren't crisp on offense and our passing struggled. I thought we did a good job of keeping rallies alive, but with our offense struggling we couldn't capitalize. We need to regroup and bounce back with a good performance Sunday."
Binghamton was led by freshman middle hitter Alexis LaGoy, who registered a team-high 12 kills. Sophomore Allison Hovierecorded 10 terminations to extend her streak of matches with at least 10 kills to 12. Senior setter Amanda Dettmannregistered her sixth consecutive double-double with 35 assists and 15 digs. Sophomore libero Bailey Walker tallied a match-high 28 digs.
The Bearcats struggled to find a rhythm all night compiling a .133 attack percentage as the Seawolves recorded 18 more kills than BU. Stony Brook's attack kept the Bearcats off-balanced all night thanks to its .265 hitting clip.
Stony Brook took control of the first set early, but Binghamton rallied to take its first lead, 10-7, behind a pair of kills from Allison Hovie. However, the Seawolves responded with a 7-1 run to regain the advantage. Binghamton stayed within striking distance thanks to a kill by Dettmann as well as multiple Stony Brook errors. A termination from Megan Burgess gave Binghamton its first set point, 24-23, but Binghamton was unable to capitalize as a pair of blocks by Stony Brook handed the Seawolves the first set, 27-25.
Following a 25-14 defeat in the second set, Binghamton displayed its resiliency in the third frame. The Bearcats and Seawolves traded punches through the stanza until an ace by Dettmann and and a pair of kills by Allison Hovie gave Binghamton a 20-16 lead. Stony Brook rallied however to even the frame at 23 before two LaGoy terminations ended the set 27-25.
Binghamton battle early in the fourth set, but a Stony Brook 8-1 run broke the frame open handing the Seawolves a commanding 20-11 advantage. The hosts never looked back from there cruising to the 25-17 fourth-set victory.
With the win Stony Brook took over control of second place in the league standings by a half game over Binghamton. The Seawolves clinched a spot in the America East tournament with the victory.
Binghamton heads to Hartford for a 1 p.m. meeting with the Hawks on Sunday, Nov. 9. If Binghamton defeats Hartford they will advance to the America East tournament.
