HAMILTON, N.Y. – Host Colgate (3-7) built a 10-point halftime lead and then shot 61 percent in the second half to post a 65-44 win over Binghamton (1-10) Thursday night at Cotterell Court.
The Bearcats cut their deficit to single digits midway through the second half but an ensuing 15-0 Colgate run locked in the win. The Raiders hit five of their first eight three-point shots in the second period and won for the 10
th time in 12 all-time meetings against Binghamton.
"It's a struggle right now," head coach
Tommy Dempsey said. "Our confidence is shaky and you don't fix that overnight. We've played ourself into a little bit of a rut and we'll need to practice our way out of it. We showed up to fight tonight, though, and that's what I was most looking to see. We played really good defense early and battled. I thought our first half might've been our best defensive half of the year because Colgate's a very good offensive team. We're playing a little unsure right now but there will be better performances ahead." Â
Freshman forward
Dusan Perovic, the reigning America East Rookie of the Week, scored a team-high 16 points to pace the Bearcats, who were limited to 35 percent shooting. Sophomore forward
Nick Madray added nine points and seven rebounds.
The Bearcats were within three, 14-11, with 5:38 left in the first half before the Raiders used a 10-0 run to create some space. Colgate hit a pair of threes and BU finished the half missing 6-of-7 shots as the hosts took a 26-16 lead into halftime. Yacob had five points at the break and freshman forward
Willie Rodriguez pulled down six boards. Binghamton had eight turnovers in the game's first 12 minutes and BU shot just 29 percent from the floor.
Binghamton next plays at Boston College at 1 p.m. Sunday. The game, BU's second against an ACC school this season, will be shown on ESPN3.
