VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton men's basketball nears the end of its non-conference slate when the Bearcats (1-12) travel to Emmitsburg, Md. to face Mt. St. Mary's (3-6) Monday night. The teams will tip at 7 p.m. at Knott Arena. The game will be BU's second in a three-day span.
The Bearcats are coming off Saturday's 69-51 home loss to Atlantic-10 member St. Bonaventure Saturday afternoon. Binghamton trailed by just two with under 12 minutes remaining before Bona used a 28-7 run to pull away.
The reigning Northeast Conference champion Mountaineers are coming off aÂ
46-45 loss at American on Saturday. In that game, American got the winning bucket on a layup with 0.5 seconds left. Andrew Smeathers and Gregory Graves had eight points apiece. Seven-foot center Taylor Danaher grabbed 12 rebounds.
QUICK HITS • Sophomore forward
Nick Madray poured in 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting — the fifth time he's reached the 20-point mark in his young career. Madray, however, exited the game with 4:32 remaining with an injury and he will not play Monday night.
• Freshman wing
Justin McFadden added nine points, six rebounds and two steals in a team-high 38 minutes. McFadden went 5-for-5 from the free throw line and is converting 88% (37-of-42) for the season, 67th in the NCAA.
• Binghamton has statistically the youngest team in the entire country (StatSheet.com). Its 14 players have a combined 10 years of collegiate experience. There are only two upperclassmen on the roster (1 senior, 1 junior).
• Three of the team's top-4 scorers are freshmen and the starting lineup for the last four games has featured four freshmen and a sophomore.
• The team has just two non-conference games remaining before America East play begins on Jan. 2 at UMass Lowell. After the Mt. St. Mary's game, BU will enjoy its longest layoff of the season (7 days) before hosting fellow SUNY school Buffalo on Dec. 30.
• Mount St. Mary's (3-6), two-time reigning Northeast Conference finalist and defending 2014 champion, has quickly built a reputation for a run-and-gun, press and three-point-shooting style. The team launches more than 25 three-point attempts per game.
• The Mount went 16-17 last season but defeated St. Francis Brooklyn, Wagner and Robert Morris in the NEC Tournament to win the title. The Mountaineers lost to fellow America East school Albany, 71-64, in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament in Dayton, Ohio. Three 1,000-point scorers, including a pair of all-conference players, have graduated from that 2014 title team and thus, The Mount was picked to finish fifth in the Preseason Coaches Poll.
• Mt. St. Mary's has played a tough schedule that has featured games against No. 2 Arizona (L 78-55), Wake Forest (L 83-49), Seton Hall (L78-55) and Bucknell (W 73-69).
ALL-TIME SERIESTh The all-time series is even at 2-2 after BU posted a 74-70 win in Emmitsburg last December. In that game, Binghamton shot 68 percent in the second half and put four in double figures. Marlon Beck scored a team-high 19 points and
Yosef Yacob sank 6-of-6 free throws in the final 39 seconds. Yacob scored 15 of his season-high 18 points in the second half and
Nick Madray tallied 10 of his 12 points in the final frame. Madray grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds to post his first collegiate double-double. The teams have alternated wins since beginning the series in 2005. The road team has won the last two games and all four games have been decided by single digits.Â
