BUFFALO, N.Y. - Senior
Connie Gormley and junior
Stephani Church scored second-half goals to carry Binghamton women's soccer (4-4) past host Canisius (1-7) 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Demske Sports Complex. The win was BU's fourth in its last five games.
After a scoreless first half, the Bearcats got on the board in the 59th minute off a corner kick. Senior midfielder
Emily Nuss sent the kick into the box, where classmate and center back Gormley beat the keeper for her second career goal.
In the 82nd minute, Church added an insurance goal - again off a corner kick. Junior midfielder
Rebecca Raber sent the kick into the box, where freshman back
Valerie McNamara fed it to Church, who made no mistake from close range. It was Church's second goal of the season.
Senior
Gaby Gold (2 saves) and freshman
Katie Hatziyianis each played a half and shared their second shutout of the season.
"It was nice to end the weekend with a strong performance," head coach
Sarah McClellan said. "We tried to control the tempo of the game in the first half and then in the second half I thought we came out hard and worked everywhere on the field. We looked real dangerous on set pieces and scored the two off corner kicks. We played a great game from start to finish and it was nice to get the shutout."
Binghamton outshot Canisius 20-5.
The Bearcats play at St. Bonaventure on Friday before concluding their non-conference slate with a home game against Cornell next Sunday.
