Allison Hovie recorded a match-high 13 kills to lead the Binghamton volleyball team to a straight set victory over Cornell, Wednesday night at Newman Arena. The Bearcats snapped a seven-match losing streak in the process, picking up an important victory in their final non-conference tune-up before America East play begins Friday in Albany.
Allison Hovie registered a season-high .323 hitting percentage in her first match back since September 9, when Binghamton defeated Siena in straight sets. Junior right side
Megan Burgess was solid all night with 12 kills and a .462 hitting percentage, committing just one attack error. Senior setter
Amanda Dettmann handed out a match-high 35 assists to go along with her eight digs.
In the opening set, Binghamton found themselves behind quickly 7-4, but kills by Dettmann and
Kristin Hovie propelled the Bearcats on a 3-0 run. Back-to-back blocks gave the Bearcats their first lead of the set, forcing a Cornell timeout. The Big Red pulled within one thanks to a 5-2 run, but five kills from
Allison Hovie and a.340 hitting clip boosted Binghamton to the 25-22 first-set victory.
The Bearcats continued to press the Big Red in the second set as a
Bailey Walker service ace gave Binghamton the early advantage. However, an emphatic 7-1 run by Cornell pushed the Big Red ahead, 13-9. The Bearcats responded with a resounding 14-3 to take control of the second set 23-16. A pair of aces by
Allison Hovie helped Binghamton take a 2-0 lead into the break, 25-20.
Binghamton controlled the final frame from start to finish recording at a .300 hitting percentage for the second time in the match. Burgess highlighted the set with six of her 12 kills, while
Allison Hovie added four terminations. A stout Binghamton defense limited Cornell to .000 attack percentage for the second straight set cruising to the 25-14 third-set victory.
Walker tallied a match-high 15 digs for the Bearcats, who recorded at least nine total blocks for the third time in 2014. Binghamton also connected on six service aces while limiting Cornell to just one. Freshman
Alexis LaGoy had a solid match with six kills, a .750 attack percentage and four blocks.
Binghamton opens America East play at Albany on Friday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. from University Gymnasium in the state's capital. Prior to last season, Binghamton and Albany combined for the previous nine America East titles (Albany 6, Binghamton 3). Last season, each team earned straight-set victories on their home courts.
