VESTAL, N.Y. - Riding the wave of Friday's comeback win over Hofstra, Binghamton wrestling (4-5, 2-0 EIWA) looks to keep its perfect conference record in tact when the Bearcats host Columbia (1-1, 0-0 EIWA) in a dual match at 2 p.m. Sunday at West Gym.
Binghamton is fresh off the riveting 19-16 win over the Pride Friday at the New York Athletic Club. The Bearcats spotted their in-state rivals a 10-point cushion before storming back with wins in the final three matches. Senior heavyweight
Tyler Deuel capped the dramatic comeback with a 3-1 decision in the final match of the evening. With the match tied at 16-16, Deuel (13-4) used a first-period takedown and second-period escape to build the winning cushion. Other winners for BU were senior 125-pound
David White, freshman 157-pound
Vincent DePrez, sophomore 165-pound
Zack Zupan, junior 184-pound
Jack McKeever and senior 197-pound
Caleb Wallace.
Binghamton's lineup is minus two injured starters (
Thierno Diallo and
Nick Kelley) and includes three true freshmen (133-pound
Joe Nelson, 157-pound
Vincent DePrez and 174-pound
Steve Schneider). Deuel (13-4) has been in the national rankings this season and currently sits at No. 2 in the EIWA and No. 27 (country) in the Wrestling Report. Senior 133-pound reigning NCAA qualifier
David White is ranked No. 4 in the EIWA and redshirt freshman 165-pound
Zack Zupan is No. 6 in the EIWA. Junior 184-pound
Jack McKeever is 14-7 overall and DePrez (15 wins) and Schneider (13 wins) are showing their promise.Â
The Lions (1-1) are coming off a 27-9 win at Buffalo Friday night. In that match, Columbia won eight of the 10 bouts, including the last seven to blow past the Bulls. The team has four individuals in the latest EIWA Rankings, led by sophomore 157-pound Marcus Scheidel (No. 3), a reigning NCAA qualifier who is 10-6 this season. Sophomore 133-pound Angelo Amenta (No. 4) is one spot behind BU's
David White in the rankings. Junior 125-pound Johnson Mai (No. 6) is coming off a win at Buffalo, as is junior Zack Hernandez (No. 6 in EIWA). Freshman 165-pound Tyrel White is 14-9 and carrying momentum after winning four matches at the Midlands Championship. As a team, Columbia is ranked No. 6 in the EIWA, two spots ahead of the Bearcats.Â
Binghamton is 2-4 all-time against Columbia, including last year's 24-9 road loss.
