VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball will return to the diamond this weekend - just a bit further south than originally planned. The Bearcats' three-game series against Radford (Va.) has been moved to Forest City, N.C., with inclement weather and field conditions negating the Highlanders' home field in Radford.Â
The teams will now play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and finish up with a single game at noon on Sunday - all at McNair Field, home of the summer league Forest City Owls.
The Bearcats (1-2) have been idle since opening with a solid 1-2 showing against SEC member Auburn on Feb. 13-15. The team's scheduled three-game set at William & Mary was cancelled due to snow last weekend.
Binghamton will send out its regular top-three starters for their second outings of the season. Senior No. 1
Greg Ostner (0-1, 4.15 ERA) will start the opening game of the doubleheader. Junior
Mike Bunal (1-0, 2.25 ERA) will pitch the nightcap and junior
Rob Hardy (0-0, 0.00) will go on Sunday. The trio combined for a stellar 2.03 ERA against Auburn.
Senior right fielder
Jake Thomas leads the Bearcats at the plate after going 6-for-13 (.462) with five RBI in the Auburn series. Junior third baseman
David Schanz (.364) and junior second baseman
Reed Gamache (.300) have also gotten off to quick starts.
Radford (2-4) won two of three against Samford to open the season. The Highlanders then dropped all three to Auburn, though they were close contests, including a 3-2 10-inning affair in the opener. Radford is expected to offer left-hander Michael Boyle (1-0, 1.38 ERA), righty Dylan Nelson (0-1, 6.76 ERA) and lefty Mitchell MacKeith (0-1, 10.00 ERA) as its starters in the series.
