VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton baseball will look to put a tough weekend behind them when the Bearcats (4-12) travel to Happy Valley to face Penn State (8-14) in a non-conference game Tuesday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Binghamton is coming off a three-game sweep at the hands of UMBC. In the opener, BU squandered a 9-1 lead and lost 10-9 in 13 innings. The Bearcats then dropped a twinbill on Sunday, falling 3-1 and 4-0. It's the first time in 12 years that BU has been swept in a series against the Retrievers, whom they own a 40-9 win cushion against.
Senior right fielder
Jake Thomas leads the team with a .373 average and 12 RBI. Senior center fielder
Zach Blanden is hitting .339 with 14 runs scored and sophomore catcher
Eddie Posavec is batting .304 with 11 RBI.
Redshirt freshman right-hander Jake Wloczewski (0-0, 6.14 ERA) is slated to start the game. But 23rd-year head coach
Tim Sinicki will utilize a committee of arms during the game, with BU's three-game conference set against UMass Lowell looming on the weekend.
The Nittany Lions are 6-1 at home this season. They've won five in a row, including a three-game sweep of Central Connecticut State over the weekend. The team is hitting .263 and has a pitching ERA of 5.00.
Penn State returns seven starters and 19 letterwinners from last year's squad, which went 18-32. The team's underclassmen are drawing attention in the Big Ten. The league recognized sophomore shortstop Jim Haley, redshirt-sophomore third baseman Christian Helsel and freshman LHP Taylor Lehman as "Players to Watch." Helsel is a transfer from Ole Miss in his first season at Penn State. Senior outfielder Aaron Novak leads the team with a .390 average and 18 RBI. Haley is hitting .292 with 16 RBI. Junior left-hander Jordan Donmoyer (0-1, 3.86 ERA) will get the start.
This will be the second meeting between the two programs. In 2012, Penn State posted an 8-2 win at University Park.
