Women's soccer hosts UMBC Thursday

Bearcats and Retrievers kick-off at 7 p.m. at Sports Complex

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton women's soccer (7-3-3, 1-2 America East) looks to even its conference record when the Bearcats host UMBC (2-6-3, 0-2 AE) at 7 p.m. Thursday night at the Sports Complex. The team has five league games remaining - three at home - in its quest to reach the postseason.

After losing just once in the team's first 10 games, BU has dropped two of its first three America East games. On Sunday, the Bearcats lost 2-0 to visiting Vermont. Binghamton held a 19-7 shots advantage but was kept off the scoreboard for just the second time in 13 games.

The Catamounts scored in the 25th minute off a cross to the middle. The Bearcats stepped up their offensive pace in the second half and had 13 shots and four corners but couldn't find the precision needed. Vermont added a goal in the 71st minute  to seal the win.

Redshirt junior forward Kayla Saager leads the America East in goals (9), assists (5) and points (23). She ranks ninth in the nation in goals and points. Sophomore forward Ryan Reilly has three goals and an assist and freshman forward Essie Bonney has three goals.

Senior keeper Katie Hatziyianis carries a 0.85 goals against average with four shutouts. Freshman Mackenzie Hanna played the final 48+ minutes against Vermont after Hatziyianis left with an injury. Hanna shared an early-season shutout and has a 0.96 GAA.

UMBC is winless in its last four outings, including conference losses to Albany (3-1) and Maine (1-0). On Sunday in Orono, the Retrievers gave up a goal in the 16th minute but hung close with the league-leading Black Bears. UMBC was near-even in shots (13-12) and had 12 corner kicks.

Four players have two goals apiece for UMBC, which was picked to finish last in the preseason coaches' poll - one spot behind the Bearcats.
