BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Binghamton men's tennis (4-16) steamrolled to five singles wins and posted a 5-2 win over visiting Colgate (14-6) in a four-plus hour match Sunday night at the Binghamton Tennis Center.Â
After dropping the doubles point, BU rebounded in singles, winning four three-set matches, including the clinching match at fifth singles, where freshman
Alejandro Pena fought off a match point before prevailing 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (2). The Bearcats played without top player
Ludovico Cestarollo but the adjusted lineup hung strong in the team's final home match of the season.Â
"We've been through a lot of curveballs this year with injuries and other things and tonight was no different," head coach
Nick Zieziula said. "We had a hard time getting into it in the doubles and played our worst point all year. But credit to the team for rallying and not giving in. Colgate has had a strong year and while we didn't play great tennis we found a way to pull together and compete well. It was a team effort but especially great job by Josh (Druger) for stepping in off the bench for his first singles action in a long time and getting the 'W.'"Â
Sophomore No. 2
Tiago Lourenco rallied from a set down and also shook off a match point for a 1-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4 victory in the final match of the long evening.Â
Junior No. 4
Inigo Saez set the tone in singles with a commanding 6-2, 6-1 win. Saez was first off the court and his win evened the match at 1-1 after the Raiders had captured the doubles point.
Junior No. 6
Josh Druger worked three sets for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win - and his victory gave BU a 3-2 lead, setting the stage for Pena's clinching point. The Bearcats' other singles win came off the racquet of sophomore
Sebastian Quiros, who posted a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 win at No. 3.Â
The Bearcats have remaining MAC matches at Toledo (Friday) and Ball State (Saturday) and will need to win both to remain alive for a MAC tournament berth.Â
