VESTAL, N.Y. - After a short turnaround from the team's season opener Friday night, Binghamton women's soccer (0-0-1) hosts Marist (0-0-0) in its home opener Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Bearcats Sports Complex. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ as part of the America East season-long package with ESPN platforms.Â
The Bearcats opened their season with a 3-3 double overtime draw Friday night at St. Bonaventure. Binghamton seemed to be cruising toward a decisive victory with a 3-0 second-half lead before the Bonnies tallied the final three goals to earn the tie. Senior forward
Kayla Saager and junior forward
Ryan Reilly had a goal and an assist apiece and sophomore forward
Genna Michitti scored BU's third goal early in the second half.
The Bonnies, however, scored three goals in the final 30 minutes of regulation, including the tying goal on a penalty shot with just 1:04 remaining.
The Bearcats held a 19-10 shots margin and were awarded seven corner kicks.
Freshman keeper
Haylee Poltorak posted a clean first-half in her collegiate debut in net. Â Â
This is the season opener for the Red Foxes and the head coaching debut of first-year coach Leigh Howard. Howard previously served as an assistant coach at Bucknell for the past three seasons, helping the Bison reach back-to-back NCAA Tournaments and a 39-17-5 record in her tenure.
Last season, Marist went 8-8-3 (5-3-2 MAAC, 5th place) and lost in the quarterfinals of the MAAC tournament. Marist was picked to finish seventh in the 11-team MAAC this fall.
Sophomore defender Nicole Sasso was named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team. Â
This will be just the third meeting all-time between the two teams - an oddity given that the schools are separated by just 100+ miles. Marist owns a 1-0-1 mark, having posted a 2-0 home win in 2012 before the teams tied 1-1 in Vestal in 2013.Â
