KINGSTON, R. I. – Sophomores
Chris Egan and
Ryan Board as well as junior
Kaitlyn Smolar all recorded first-place finishes, highlighting Binghamton's performance at the Rhode Island Swimming & Diving Invitational, which concluded on Sunday afternoon. The Bearcats men were second out of four teams in the three-day event while the women placed second out of seven teams.
"Across the board, we swam very well this weekend," head coach
Jerry Cummiskey said "We had a few lifetime-best swims and even in the events we didn't win, we had a lot a depth in the scoring. This was a great team effort and prepares us well going forward."
Egan swept the men's one and three-meter diving events, with scores of 273.05 and 268.15 respectively. It marks the second time this year that he has captured both diving events. In addition, he has now won the three-meter competition in each of his past three meets.
Board captured the men's 100 breast (57.88) and 200 breast (2:08.55). He also was part of the first-place 200 medley relay team that included senior
Ross Bernstein, junior
Shane Morris and freshman
Justin Meyn. The Bearcat quartet clocked a time of 1:35.15.
Smolar, meanwhile, took top honors in the women's 1,650 with a time of 17:32.50. She was also second in the 500 free (5:00.44) and third in the 200 free (1:52.89).
Other second-place finishes on the women's side were turned in by junior
Sophia Howard in the three-meter diving event (243.50) and senior
Olivia Santos in the 100 free (52.81). Freshman
Audrey Pesek, meanwhile, was second in the 100 back (56.48) and third in the 200 back (2:06.71). Both of her swims were lifetime-best performances.
On the men's side, Bernstein was second in both the 200 IM (1:55.22) and the 200 fly (1:52.74) and Meyn was the runner up in the 100 free (47.58). Freshman
Ryan Cohn was second in three-meter diving event (260.05) and junior
Erik Temple was the runner up in the one-meter competition (249.60).
Freshman
Jackson Homan was second in the 400 IM (4:08.52) and took third in the both the 200 IM (1:55.63) and the 200 fly (1:53.16). Fellow freshman
Matthew Palguta, meanwhile, was second in the 200 free (1:40.26) and third in the 500 free (4:41.29).
Freshman
Zach Ciriaco was second in the 1,650 free (16:34.42).
Host Rhode Island won the women's meet while Providence won the men's competition.
Binghamton returns to New York and will be at Cornell on Tuesday at 4 p.m. for its final meet of the fall semester.
