BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Binghamton men's tennis (0-1, 0-1 MAC) grabbed the doubles point but visiting Buffalo (3-1, 1-0 MAC) won five of the six singles matches to topple the Bearcats 5-2 indoors Saturday afternoon at the Binghamton Tennis Center. .
"I was really happy with the start in doubles today ... the guys had great energy and great commitment to movement over the middle and it paid off," head coach Nick Ziezula said. "In singles, our inexperience showed through too much. I thought we maintained a positive mindset and great energy but we gave away too many free points and let them roll with momentum too long."
Freshman Shourya Verma was the highlight of the afternoon for Binghamton, winning both of his matches. Verma and Michael Pawlowicz won at No. 1 doubles, 6-3. Verma then went on to win his match at No. 3 singles, 7-6, 6-4.
"Verma did well to find a way to win today," Ziezula said. "He didn't hit the ball particularly well but he kept problem solving and stayed sharp mentally to get it done."
Dan Pergel and Josh Kim also won their doubles match at No. 2 to secure the doubles point. After dropping the first game, the duo rattled off six straight games in a dominant performance, sparked by Kim's covering of the net.
Binghamton hits the road next weekend, traveling to Kalamazoo, Mich. to face Western Michigan at noon on Saturday.
