STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Graduate students
Dan Schaffer and
Emily Mackay swept the mile events with national-caliber times, highlighting Binghamton's performance at the Penn State National Indoor Track & Field Open. The two-day event, which did not include team scoring, concluded on Saturday afternoon.
Schaffer clocked a first-place time of 3:58.84, marking the second time in his career that he has broken the four-minute mark. His time ranks No. 10 at the NCAA Division I level so far this indoor season.
Schaffer's lifetime-best mile time is 3:58.44, which he set on May 15, 2021 at the Toledo Rocket Invitational. He is one of three Binghamton runners to have broken the four-minute mile mark during their collegiate careers (Erik van Ingen and Jesse Garn being the other two).
Mackay, meanwhile, captured the women's mile with a time of 4:32.55. In the process, she destroyed her own school record (4:46.38 in 2020) and recorded the fastest women's time at the Division I level during the current indoor season.
Mackay now has a pair of top times in the nation so far this season. Her converted 800 time of 2:04.78 came at the Lehigh Angry Birds Meet last Saturday.
"What an amazing day for Binghamton track & field," distance coach
Annette Acuff said. "Dan and Emily executed to perfection today. We are thrilled with both of their starts to the indoor season."
This marks the second week in a row that Schaffer and Mackay have recorded victories in the same event. Schaffer also won the 800 in the men's competition at Lehigh.
Also in the women's mile at Penn State, senior
Aziza Chigatayeva was third overall with a time of 4:51.02. In the process, she recorded the third-fastest time in Binghamton program history, trailing only Mackay's past and current program records.
Freshman
Jenna Chan, meanwhile, tied her freshman program record in the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.74 in the preliminaries. Her finals time of 8.86 was good for sixth place overall.
Elsewhere on the men's side, sophomore
Josh Stone was second in the 5,000 (14:37.84) and senior
Jake Restivo took third place in the long jump (23-2 ¾).
Binghamton returns to Penn State next Saturday for the Sykes & Sabock Challenge.
