Bearcats win doubles point, three singles matches to secure win in home opener

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Binghamton men's tennis (1-6) captured the doubles point and that proved to be the difference in a 4-3 win over visiting FDU (0-2) Saturday afternoon at the Binghamton Tennis Center. The teams split the six singles matches.

Sophomore Kyle Weekes was a double winner, teaming with freshman Joshua Roe Flannelly for the clinching win at No. 2 doubles and then posting a 7-6, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles. Junior No. 6 Adi Ben-Ari provided the clinching victory with a straight-set win. Earlier, sophomore No. 1 Shourya Verma needed barely an hour to post his team-high 10th win of the season.

"It's been a long time coming," head coach Nick Zieziula said. "I'm so happy for this group. We went through a tough spring last year and it's been a rough start on results but this group keeps putting on an attitude of gratitude, embracing the challenges and building up their teammates. Adi (Ben-Ari) did well to use his offense at the end to close it out when things were getting tight on the scoreboard."

Before the match, the teams held a moment of silence in memory of program supporter and avid tennis fan Michael Haggerty, who passed away last week. Haggerty was an owner of The Star Group, a primary sponsor of Bearcats tennis. He also was a Binghamton University graduate who worked 34 years with the Broome County Department of Social Services and was an active volunteer, board member and advisor with numerous community educational initiatives.

Binghamton returns to action next Sunday in West Point with matches against Georgetown and host Army.
