Bearcats compete at Virginia and Bucknell

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. & LEWISBURG, Pa. – It was a weekend of school records for the Binghamton track & field programs.

The Bearcats competed at the non-scoring Virginia Challenge and the Bucknell Team Challenge on Friday and Saturday. At Bucknell, the Bearcat men were fourth out of 10 teams while the women finished fifth out of 10 squads.

Graduate student Dan Schaffer placed second overall in the invitational section of the 5,000 at Virginia with a time of 13:36.23. That smashed his own school record of 13:45, which he set at the Raleigh Relays last month. Schaffer's current time unofficially puts him among the Top 10 performances in the East Region so far this year.

Fellow graduate student Emily Mackay was third overall in the 1,500 invitational section at Virginia, clocking a time of 4:13.57. That eclipses her 2021 mark of 4:17.37 and unofficially, puts her in the top five of the NCAA East Region performances.

Senior Aziza Chigatayeva was fifth in the 3,000 steeplechase (SC) invitational section at Virginia, posting a time of 10:14.31. She set the previous mark of 10:15.84 last year. Unofficially, Chigatayeva is among the Top 20 performances in the East Region.

Binghamton's final school record was set by the 4x400 relay team of graduate students Brittany Korsah and Nia Joyner, senior Stephanie Cassens and freshman Hillary Abankwa. The quartet clocked a time of 3:41.88 and placed fourth at Virginia. The previous mark of 3:44.36 was set in 2013.

Also at Virginia, junior Marcrene Jeannot was seventh overall in the men's triple jump (49-7 ¼).

At Bucknell, meanwhile, Binghamton's top finisher was Andriy Prokopiv, who was first in the men's 400 hurdles (55.06).

Runner-up finishes were turned in by senior Spencer Thomas in the discus (156-3), junior Cian Galligan in the 1,500 (3:50.41) and junior Nick Malfitano in the 110 hurdles (14.98).

On the women's side, senior Madison Krochina was second in the hammer (157-2).

Third-place finishes were recorded by junior Carolyn Burnell in the 1,500 (4:43.99) and junior Claire Brenner in the 5,000 (19:54.30)
