Bearcats add Costa, Ajed and Carlson to roster

VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton men's tennis coach Nick Zieziula has announced the addition of three freshmen to the Bearcats program for the 2023-24 year. Set to bolster BU's lineup are Filipe Costa (Goiania, Brazil), Andre Ajed (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Matthew Carlson (Buffalo, N.Y.).

The trio of newcomers join a talented, young roster that will also feature two juniors and four sophomores.

Costa is currently ranked No. 14 in Brazil's U18 with a current ITF junior ranking of 690. In April he won the ITF J30 Santa Cruz event in Bolivia for his first ITF singles title. Costa was No. 1 in Brazil in U16 and had a ranking of No. 9 in COSAT, a South American junior circuit.

Ajed is a 4-star recruit (tennisrecruiting.net) who is ranked No. 2 in Hawaii for his class and No. 137 nationally. Currently he is No. 2 in Hawaii for U18 by the USTA and No. 78 nationally for U18.

Carlson was a two-sport standout for Nichols School and is a 3-star recruit. He is ranked No. 13 in New York State for his class and No. 345 nationally. Currently, Carlson is No. 45 in the Eastern Section for USTA. He also played basketball for a highly-regarded Nichols program.

"We are really excited about the potential that this class has," Zieziula said. "All three of these guys have some explosive weapons and the ability to get to the net which is going to serve them well indoors. We are going to have a young team with a lot of enthusiasm and a great culture and mindset, really looking forward to getting started with them."
