ALBANY, N.Y. – The Binghamton women team recorded their first runner-up finish since 2013 and the men's squad recorded their second straight top-three finish, highlighting the final day of competition at the America East Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Sunday at the UAlbany Complex. There were nine men's and women's programs competing at the two-day meet.
In addition, the Bearcats posted four more individual victories on Sunday to finish with six for the meet. Senior
Marcrene Jeannot won the men's triple jump (50-8 3/4), fellow senior
Matthew Cavaliere was first in the men's 1,500 (3:52.19), junior
Jenna Chan captured the women's 100 hurdles (13.67) and sophomore
Lucciana Robertson took top honors in the women's high jump (5-5 ¾).
For Jeannot and Robertson, their victories completed a sweep of both the conference indoor and outdoor titles in their respective events this year. Cavaliere won his second America East title of the year, having also placed first in the men's indoor mile. Chan, meanwhile, won her third career conference championship, having won the past two indoor 60 hurdle crowns.
Jeannot was the top Binghamton men's point scorer during the meet with 15 points. He was also fourth in the long jump on Saturday.
The Bearcat women's team was projected to place third behind Albany and UMass Lowell. While the Great Danes cruised to the team championship with 218.5 points, the Bearcats were able to hold off the River Hawks for second place (131.5-124.5).
Binghamton's women's 4x400 relay team sealed the runner-up finish with a second-place finish. That team included graduate student
Stephanie Cassens, sophomore
Hillary Abankwa and seniors
Serena Gay and
Sophia Morone. The Bearcat quartet clocked a time of 3:46.91.
On the men's side, Binghamton was projected to place fourth, behind UMass Lowell, Albany and Maine. The River Hawks (198 points) and Great Danes (158 points) took the top two places but the Bearcats were able to hold off the Black Bears (104-99) for third place.
Jeannot's triple jump victory, which came with just the two final relays left to complete, gave Binghamton the points it needed to clinch third place.
"Our teams always compete at their best during conference meets," head coach
Mike Thompson said. "This weekend was no different. We were projected to get third and fourth and not second and third so these guys really stepped up, closed the gaps and our relays finished things off."
Thompson and his staff earned the Women's Coaching Staff of the Year award following the meet. He was joined by
Annette Acuff,
Jesse Fuca,
Crystal Muse,
Karson Hahn and
Nia Joyner. The last time the Bearcats earned the honor came back in 2013.
Elsewhere on the men's side on Sunday, senior
Nick Malfitano was a close second in the decathlon (6,199 points) and sophomore Joe Cardasica was third in the 400 (47.79).
Other top finishers on the women's side included Cassens, who was second in the 800 (2:10.87) and fellow graduate student
Aziza Chigatayeva, who was the runner up in the 1,500 (4:24.39). Chigatayeva ended the weekend with a women's team-best 18 points, having won the 3,000 Steeplechase (SC) on Saturday.
All-conference honors at the America East Outdoor Championships were awarded to the top three finishers in an individual event plus all first-place relay teams. Binghamton had eight men and eight women earn all-conference distinction.
Up next for Binghamton is the ECAC/IC4A Championships, which will be hosted by George Mason this coming Friday-Sunday.
