VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton women's soccer will look to even its early-season record when the Bearcats (0-1) host Canisius (0-1) Sunday afternoon at the Sports Complex. The teams will square off at 2 p.m. in a game broadcast on ESPN+. Fans can attend the game free of charge, thanks to this athletics department initiative

The Bearcats opened their season with a 2-0 road loss at Fairfield on Thursday. Binghamton surrendered a goal in the eighth minute of each half and couldn't crack the scoreboard. A much more complete second-half resulted in several quality scoring opportunities. Junior keeper Kaitlyn Williams played a strong game, making seven saves plus several more takeaways on dangerous crosses.

Canisius opened its season with a 4-0 home loss to Colgate on Thursday. The Griffs held a 10-9 shots edge but gave up two goals in each half to a Colgate team that BU had tied 1-1 in a preseason scrimmage one week earlier. Canisius was picked to finish fourth in the MAAC Preseason Poll — two spots behind the Fairfield team that beat BU 2-0 on Thursday. The Griffs put one player on the preseason all-conference team — junior midfielder Emma Oliphant. Canisius went 5-5-10 overall record (3-2-5 in MAAC) last fall. They . took the No. 5 seed and reached the MAAC tournament second round before falling to eventual champion Quinnipiac. The Griffs were the best defensive team in the MAAC last season.

Binghamton and Canisius haven't played in eight years but the Bearcats hold a 5-1-1 advantage in the all-time series. In the lasting meeting in 2015, the teams played to a scoreless draw here at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
